The International Lighting Exhibition will return to the Milan Fairgrounds in Rho under the umbrella
of the Saloni exhibition from 22nd to 27th April 2009, with a full range of offerings from the decorative to technical illumination. There will also be an evocative and spectacular event held in the courtyard of Palazzo Reale, signed by Cerith Wyn Evans.
Building on the success of the three previous editions, Euroluce 2009 is set to be a tremendous
occasion, with all the intrinsic characteristics and added value that mark it out on the global exhibition
scene as the exclusive Lighting sector benchmark event, where technological and formal innovation
come together.
Now in its 25th edition, the Biennial International Lighting Exhibition manages on one hand to be
in perfect synergy with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories
Exhibition and SaloneSatellite, all of which make up a decidedly winning triumvirate, unequivocally
considered to be a major international festival, an unfailing setter of trends and a force for innovation,
an event that radiates culture, a catalyst for ideas and projects. On the other hand, Euroluce is a totally stand-alone event, with 477 exhibiting companies ranged over 42,000 net square metres
of exhibition space laid out over 6 Pavilions, each with its own extremely functional and exceptionally
visitor-friendly layout.
Incontrovertible proof that Euroluce 2009 has reached its maturity will be the all-encompassing range of top quality goods on offer, confirmation yet again of the original interest in the decorative that
subsequently led to the involvement of other sectors such as street lighting, technical illumination,
light sources and their control systems.
Euroluce 2009 constitutes an unmissable appointment with a sectorial vision that sees light
as the budding protagonist of spaces – both internal and external – a vision that subscribes to the view
that lighting projects are becoming increasingly central to planning and design, and recognises light
pollution as an enemy to be fought at all costs and energy saving as being crucial for safeguarding
maximum environmental sustainability.
Light in all its infinite and spectacular variations will be the protagonists of the collateral event –
conceived expressly for Euroluce – I=N=N=V=O=C=A=T=I=O=N (I call your image to mind), signed by the British artist Cerith Wyn Evans, which will be set against the backdrop of the courtyard of the Palazzo Reale in Milan from 22nd to 27th April.
The piece, which is a true homage from the Saloni to the city, highlighting the close ties between
the fair itself and the urban territory, consists of a neon sculpture approximately 7 metres in diameter,
a long tube that twists and turns on itself to form a luminescent cloud that seems, to all intents and
purposes, to be floating in the air, creating a dialogue with the observer’s level of perception and degree of familiarity with light in space and light in time.
The author describes it thus: ”The burnt in ghost like traces of light sources echoed in the memory
of our recently ancient analogue technologies provide the source and springboard for this piece.
Suspended from this severe historical architecture I invoke numerable and innumerable light events,
the trajectory of a firework, the scan of a mobile telephone attempting to memorialise the vapours
of a jet stream high above. I salute the fireflies, their bafflingly chaotic ways, I marvel at the
correspondence that our meagre forms of communication learn, we constantly fail. What other
resources, what other energies are as yet untapped and unspoken? Who, knows? It’s only electricity.

SaloneSatellite 2009: embracing creativity
This spring marks the return of the unmissable design event dedicated to the creativity of the under-
35 crowd, in concomitance with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Euroluce and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition. At the Rho fairgrounds from April 22nd to 27th 2009, open as always to the general public, every day and free of charge.
2009 is the 12th edition of the ‘mascot’ of the Saloni: the SaloneSatellite, meeting place par excellence for manufacturers, talent scouts and the most promising young design talents from around the globe.
The original mission of the event has proven both worthwhile and successful: to serve as a bridge between the world of young designers (strictly under 35) and that of manufacturers, who come to the Satellite in search of interesting new projects that they can incorporate into their company’s production.
Being able to claim to have participated in the SaloneSatellite on one’s resume is a great point of honour among young designers, who view it as the quintessential springboard into the manufacturing sphere.
Consequently, in 2009 as in all previous editions, the number of applications greatly outnumbered
the places available.
The fortunate few – about 700 young designers from all over the world – will exhibit their ideas from
April 22nd to 27th in Pavilions 22 and 24 of the Rho fairgrounds. Half of them participated in the Satellite
of last year and/or the year before, in keeping with the rule that no designer can participate more than
3 times.
Along with these individuals, the Satellite features 22 design schools from 14 countries, with India
(Industrial Design Center in Mumbai), Poland (Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan), Republic of San Marino (University of San Marino) and Russia (National Design Institute of Moscow) making their debut.
The difficult task of evaluating the entries is entrusted to a prestigious Selection Committee composed
of major international figures from the worlds of design, architecture, manufacturing and communication:
Giovanni Anzani, CEO of Poliform; Cinzia Ferrara, architect and lighting designer; Beppe Finessi, architect and critic; Daniele Livi, CEO of Livit; Gege Marogna, Chief Editor of Casamica; Ettore Mocchetti, Director of AD Italia; Satyendra Pakhalè, designer (veteran of the SaloneSatellite 2001); Chantal Prod’Hom, Director of MUDAC, Lausanne; Denis Santachiara, architect; Nick Vinson, Special Projects Director, Wallpaper; Marva Griffin Wilshire, curator of the SaloneSatellite.
In keeping with its philosophy of supporting young people as they enter the world of design,
the SaloneSatellite has a longstanding agreement with ADI (Italian Industrial Design Association)
to offer special assistance to those who wish to protect their work through enrolment in the Design
Register. Copyright protection is valid only in Italy.
Architect Ricardo Bello Dias, who has designed the installation of every edition of the Satellite since
its inception, continues the tradition in 2009.
